Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze Paint Review (Accent Walls, Doors + More)

This is my honest Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze review.

After five reviews of soft whites, greiges, and gentle greens, we’re finally going dark. And Urbane Bronze is the color to do it with.

It was Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 Color of the Year, and it kicked off the whole warm-dark-neutral movement you see everywhere now: moody accent walls, dramatic front doors, black-but-not-quite kitchen islands.

The question isn’t whether it’s beautiful. It’s where a color this dark actually belongs in a farmhouse home, and where it will swallow a room whole. Let’s get into it.

Not really a competition, more a fork in the road. Tricorn Black (LRV 3) is a true, pure black with no undertones. Urbane Bronze is a warm bronze that only reads black in low light. If you want crisp, modern, unmistakable black, choose Tricorn. If you want soft, warm, and earthy, choose Urbane Bronze.

Common Mistakes with Urbane Bronze

• Drenching a dark, north-facing room. Without natural light, Urbane Bronze goes flat and heavy instead of rich and moody. In dim rooms, use it as an accent.
• Pairing it with cool grays. The green-brown undertone clashes with cool tones. Keep its companions warm: warm whites, wood, brass.
• Using chrome or cool silver fixtures. They fight the warmth. Reach for brass, bronze, or matte black instead.

My Honest Verdict

Urbane Bronze earns its Color of the Year title, and I recommend it without much hesitation, as long as you respect what a dark color needs.

As an accent it’s close to foolproof: accent walls, islands, powder rooms, built-ins, front doors, and exterior trim. In those roles it adds warmth and depth that a true black can’t, and it makes every warm white and wood tone around it look more expensive.

The one place to be careful is drenching a whole room that doesn’t get much light. There, Urbane Bronze can tip from cozy into cave. Give it natural light or give it an accent role, and it will rarely disappoint.
