The 10 Best Butlers Pantry and Scullery Paint Colors

If there’s one room in the house where you should be brave with paint, it’s the butler’s pantry.

Here’s why: it’s small, it’s enclosed, and it’s a room you pass through rather than live in. That combination makes it the perfect jewel box. A color that would overwhelm your kitchen becomes the most charming moment in the house when it’s wrapped around a pantry’s cabinets and shelves.

I’ve written about sculleries and butler’s pantries more than any other space on this site, and the question that keeps coming back is always the same: what color should I paint it? So here’s the full answer, with my ten favorite colors, the exact codes, and the rules that make any of them work.

How to Choose a Butler’s Pantry Color

Three quick rules before the colors.

Rule one: decide if you’re blending or contrasting. A pantry that’s open to the kitchen usually looks best one or two steps deeper than the kitchen cabinets, in the same temperature family. A pantry behind a door can be anything you want, and I mean anything.

Rule two: darker works here. Pantries are mostly cabinetry and shelving with very little wall, so deep colors read as rich rather than gloomy. This is the room where the moody colors you’ve been too nervous to try finally get their chance.

Rule three: raise the sheen. Satin or semi gloss on pantry cabinetry looks intentional, wipes clean, and catches the light beautifully in a small space. The high gloss lacquered pantry is a full trend of its own if you want maximum drama.

The 10 Best Butler’s Pantry Paint Colors

1. Evergreen Fog SW 9130

Evergreen Fog butler's pantry cabinets with brass hardware and marble counter

If I could only recommend one pantry color, this is it. Evergreen Fog’s muted gray-green (LRV 30) is the signature moody pantry look: deep enough for drama, soft enough to live with, and gorgeous behind brass hardware and open shelves of white dishes.

My full Evergreen Fog review covers the undertones and lighting, and everything in it applies double in a pantry.

2. Urbane Bronze SW 7048

Urbane Bronze butler's pantry with warm wood shelves and brass accents

The warm dark bronze (LRV 8) that turns a pantry into a jewel box. Urbane Bronze reads almost black in a small space, but its brown-green warmth keeps it cozy instead of cold, especially with wood shelving and warm lighting.

This is exactly the accent room role where dark colors shine, as I covered in my Urbane Bronze review.

3. Iron Ore SW 7069

Iron Ore soft black butler's pantry cabinets with open wood shelving

The soft near black (LRV 6) for the pantry that means business. Iron Ore is cooler and more charcoal than Urbane Bronze, which gives it a slightly more modern edge. Against white counters and wood tones it’s endlessly photogenic.

Choose Iron Ore over Urbane Bronze when your kitchen leans a touch cooler or more contemporary.

4. Naval SW 6244

Naval navy blue butler's pantry cabinets with brass library lights

The classic navy pantry (LRV 4). Naval with brass library lights and marble is a look that has never once gone out of style, and in a small enclosed pantry it feels like the inside of a beautiful old ship cabinet.

It’s also the anchor color I recommended in my Sea Salt review for coastal palettes, if your kitchen leans that direction.

5. Accessible Beige SW 7036

Accessible Beige butler's pantry with warm white counters and wood shelves

Not every pantry wants drama. Accessible Beige (LRV 58) is the quiet, warm choice that makes a pantry feel like a natural extension of a warm neutral kitchen, especially in open pass through sculleries where continuity matters.

My full Accessible Beige review explains why it plays well with nearly everything.

6. Alabaster SW 7008

Alabaster white butler's pantry with glass cabinet doors and marble counter

The bright classic (LRV 82). An Alabaster pantry with glass front uppers and marble reads crisp, clean, and timeless, and it’s the safest choice if your pantry doubles as a photogenic coffee station off a white kitchen.

Everything in my Alabaster review applies here, including the matching ceiling rule.

7. Shoji White SW 7042

Shoji White butler's pantry with tonal walls and cabinets and oak shelves

The soft alternative to a white pantry (LRV 74). Shoji White drenched across pantry walls, trim, and cabinetry gives you that organic, quiet luxury larder look, like the room has always been there.

See my Shoji White review for the trim rules that make the tonal look work.

8. Sea Salt SW 6204

Sea Salt green-gray butler's pantry with white counters and brass hardware

The fresh one (LRV 63). Sea Salt in a pantry reads light, breezy, and a little unexpected, and small utility spaces are exactly where its soft green-gray personality shines, as its laundry room fans already know.

The shifting undertones from my Sea Salt review matter less in a small windowless pantry, where your lighting stays consistent.

9. Shiitake SW 9173

Shiitake mushroom taupe butler's pantry cabinets with cream walls

The trending mushroom neutral (LRV 51). Shiitake on pantry cabinets against cream walls is the putty toned look that’s everywhere in high end kitchens right now, warm and current without committing to a color.

It pairs beautifully with the warm whites above, especially Shoji White walls.

10. Dried Thyme SW 6186

Dried Thyme olive green butler's pantry with wood counters and open shelving

The earthy olive (LRV 21) for pantries that want green with more warmth than Evergreen Fog offers. Dried Thyme with butcher block and baskets is pure European larder, and it deepens beautifully under warm pantry lighting.

Choose it over Evergreen Fog when your kitchen palette leans warm and rustic rather than gray toned.

Matching Your Pantry to Your Kitchen

The pantry doesn’t need to match the kitchen, but it should agree with it.

The easiest formula: keep the counter and hardware finishes consistent with the kitchen, then let the paint go deeper. White kitchen with brass? Evergreen Fog, Naval, or Urbane Bronze in the pantry, same brass. Warm greige kitchen? Accessible Beige walls with Shiitake or Dried Thyme cabinets. Coastal kitchen? Sea Salt or Naval.

And if your pantry is really a hardworking scullery, my scullery ideas and kitchen with scullery layout guides cover the planning side, while walk through butler’s pantry ideas and mini butler’s pantry ideas handle the small space versions. Sharing the room with laundry? That’s the butler’s pantry laundry room combo.

FAQs

Should a butler’s pantry be darker or lighter than the kitchen?
Usually one to two steps darker in the same temperature family, which makes the pantry feel intentional and a little special. Behind a closed door, anything goes.

What sheen is best for butler’s pantry cabinets?
Satin or semi gloss. Both wipe clean in a hardworking space and catch the light beautifully, and full high gloss is the dramatic upgrade if your cabinetry is smooth enough to handle it.

Can I paint a small pantry a dark color?
Yes, and you should consider it. Small enclosed rooms wear dark colors as cozy and jewel like rather than gloomy, especially with warm lighting and open shelving to break up the color.

Final Thoughts

The butler’s pantry is the lowest risk, highest reward paint decision in the house. Small square footage, big personality, easy repaint if you ever change your mind.

Go a step bolder than you would in the kitchen, raise the sheen, and keep the hardware consistent. And whichever color is calling you, its full honest review is linked above with everything you need before you sample.
